Wild cucumber (Echinocystis lobata) is a strange plant. It's a relative of gourd family plants such as the watermelon, squash, zucchini, and pumpkin, and it's native to Canada! Its strangely spiny fruit make it a plant that stunningly sticks out along the riverbank habitats that it frequents. Unfortunately, it's not edible!

Just like the leaves of the spaghetti squash, the leaves of wild cucumber also desiccate in a patchwork-like fashion. The contrast between the dead and live areas is quite beautiful, and it helps that the leaves don't move as they die as they were scanned while being pressed by the scanner.

The verdant green colouration of the wild cucumber's fruits coupled with their spines create an other-worldly effect.

The patterning on the fruit's flesh almost make it look as if you're looking at the surface of a planet.

Wild cucumber is a climbing vine. I was pleasantly surprised to see its tendrils move so dramatically on the scanner! You can see this in the film. The tendrils also stunningly work as stills.
