A few years ago 850 year-old squash seeds were found in a clay ball during an archeological dig in Menominee Reservation in northeastern Wisconsin. To everyone's surprise they grew! Winona LaDuke, a member of the White Earth Tribe and a well-known activist, writer and environmentalist named it Gete-okosomin, which from Ojibwemowin roughly translates to "Cool old squash". Since these fascinating heirloom seeds were found they've spread across North America and around the world. Like the leaves of the spaghetti squash plant, these leaves also dry out in a patchwork like manner.

The beautiful colours created by the contrast between the live and dead areas really stands out in this first leaf. It helps that the leaves don't move as they die as they were scanned while being pressed by the scanner.

Because this leaf wasn't pressed, it dries out very differently than the first one.

Even though it was pressed just as the first one was, this leaf dries out in a much less-colourful fashion!
